Chasing Shotgun Annie

The Marquis Downs 6-furlong race trace record is held by Shotgun Annie, a then 6-year-old Bay Mare foaled in 1975

Shotgun Annie’s career started in 1978 at Agua Caliente Racetrack in Tijuana, Mexico. Occasionally, she made appearances at Del Mar and Santa Anita in California, followed by a series of less than stellar finishes at Turf Paradise in Phoenix, before coming north of the border to Winnipeg, Saskatoon and Regina in 1981. Late that same year, she found herself making a few pit stops at tracks in Louisiana before making her way back west between Arizona and California. Her last career ride was in December of 1982 in Phoenix at Turf Paradise.

Interestingly, Shotgun Annie only took two rides at Marquis Downs, but she really made them count. Finishing first in both races, she set the track’s 6-furlong record on August 7, 1981, by clocking a time of 1:10.4 0. Every Thoroughbred horse that has raced a 6-furlong race here at Marquis Downs since, has been chasing her record.
